The basic philosophy of a Mastermind group is that more can be achieved in less time when people work together. In ancient Greece, the great teachers of the day - Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates - all surrounded themselves with those who would challenge their own thinking. At the age of 21, Benjamin Franklin regularly met with a group of like-minded people. In his famous book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill wrote that Andrew Carnegie contributes much of his success to his Mastermind group. Every US president has had a formal cabinet and an informal group of people that give him support and ideas.
We all know that two heads are better than one when it comes to solving a problem or coming up with new ideas. Sometimes as individuals we are too close to the challenge to see the best solutions. So imagine having a permanent group of people who meet every other week for the purpose of sharing, brainstorming, networking, challenging, motivating and encouraging each other. By using synergy, 1+1=3 or 1+5= 25. This may not hold water with the mathematicians but that’s the incredible power of the Mastermind principle. You combine the power of working together with spiritual power to accomplish much more than you could on your own.
BENEFITS OF A MASTERMIND GROUP
#1 Accountability. It is a well-known fact that if you tell someone else what your goals are, there is more incentive to actually reach those goals. For that reason, being in a Mastermind group motivates you to do your very best. Much like Weight Watchers groups weigh in on the scale every meeting, in a Mastermind group you report on your goals.
When you share your goals, two things happen:
1. They become more real in your own mind and
2. There is the accountability of letting group members know how you are progressing.
Tell the group your goals and what you intend to accomplish and then expect them to hold your feet to the fire in reaching those goals.
#2 Differing Perspectives. Some of the strength of the group comes from its diversity. A different perspective is sometimes the only thing you need. The group consists of people from different backgrounds and different ways of viewing the world.
#3 Encouragement. Yes, we want encouragement. But not false pats on the back while heading in the wrong direction. We want real encouragement that comes with suggestions that will help us to grow, to stretch, and to consider new alternatives.
Don’t expect your group to just pat you on the back and congratulate you on everything you are doing. Expect and demand that they challenge you when making a decision or to push you if you are resisting making one.
Celebrate the milestones of your members. Don’t forget that their accomplishments are also your accomplishments, so celebrate for the both of you.
#4 Relationships. A Mastermind group provides a safe harbor – a group of peers who can tell each other everything. Members must be comfortable enough with each other to tell the honest, unvarnished truth. Yes, it may take a little time to establish trust and rapport in the group, but it is our aim to arrive there within two months. And that trust will increase over time
Commitment. A six-month commitment, with a right to renew in January and July of each year. Minimum attendance of 75% attendance is expected. (If you are not ill, you are there.)
Moving On. If you reach a season in your life where you recognize your need to move on, we ask that you present that desire to the entire group, allowing us to bless you and thank you for your time with us.
Sometimes, even with screening, a member isn’t the right fit for a group. If two members of the group ask for a “vote of confidence” on one of the members, a vote will be taken. If 50% or more of the group vote in favor of the individual leaving the group, the individual will be asked to leave the group. That doesn’t mean we don’t like you. It just means you aren’t a good fit.
WHAT A MASTERMIND GROUP IS NOT
• Group therapy. Whining, complaining, or gossiping will not be tolerated (or will be limited to one minute).
• Secret Agendas
• An opportunity to generate leads or promote products or services
• Distractions or multi-tasking of any type - phones, TV, e-mail, social networks, etc.
• Members should be self-aware and to not try to dominate the conversation or give orders.
• Leave your ego at the door.
